Titans #3

How low can we go and do we want to stick around to find out?

I’m pseudo sick of the Goth thing and it’s only been one issue. I’m not sure who the creators are trying to pander to Marilyn Manson fans or the parents who think Marilyn Manson is evil and corrupting. Either way the pandering is completely missing me. The sign-my-book-of-death thing and then go kill people a la Goth is hokey and not to mention predictable. Also I could have done without the KEWL "song" lyrics scrolled endlessly across the pages of the dance scene. They were a poor attempt, as best, to create suspense or maybe irony. It is so poorly done, that I can’t tell the intent. If I’m a literary queen and I can’t tell, I’m pretty sure that un-literary savvy had no clue what their purpose was. The e-mail they have Damage reading actually has text that you can read if you feel like it, which is kinda cool. Unfortunately, the e-mail is supposed to be about the horrible atrocity that happened at this person’s school(death a la Goth), instead it is the beginning of a "elaborate Superman joke". The contradiction between what the e-mail is supposed to be and what the e-mail is really proves for a cheap ten second laugh, but strikes me mostly as an amateur attempt at comedy. As for the pattern being formed by these Goth-like murders, a pentagram, can we say blase to the point of foolishness.

I did like something about this issue—the characterization. I enjoyed the Donna scenes and the character spotlight. It was well written, if not slightly trite. I feel sorry for the poorly slob trying to pick her up though(and the moral of this story is?). The guys watching the horror movie and then grossing out was cheap laughs, but good cheap laughs in my opinion. Damage’s complete fanboyish devotion to Goth is albeit sickening, amusingly accurate of fanboys (and fangirls).

This book is overall mindless and boring, with an occasional flash of brilliance, but those are VERY few and far between. I’m not sure it’s worth sticking around to see how awful this book can get. So far it’s off to a tremendous head start. I’m just not confident that I have the stomach to sit through much more of this.
