The music on this album is some of the prettiest instrumental tracks I
have ever heard in my life... infinitely better than ANY piece of so
called classical music.
The use of the flute in the album to produce a eerie haunting quality is
sheer genius. The flute especially stands out in "The Young Man From
the East", which is referring to the male love interest of Princess
Mononoke, Ashitaka. Another beautiful song with extensive flute parts, which
is also about Ashitaka, is called "The Legend of Ashitaka Theme. " You can sit
and listen to these two songs for hours and still feel like you're
hearing them for the first time.
Dramatic overtures followed by periods of extremely calm music are
common and perfectly placed. "The Demon god" is probably one of the
most entertaining pieces to listen to. You could sit and listen to this
song all day and not be bored by it....it's that good.
The album is not, however all instrumental pieces, just a majority. There
are two songs on the album that actually have words. One of them, "The
Tatara Women Work Song," is in, I can only presume, Japanese. I don't
have the foggiest clue what they're singing, but it sound really pretty
and harmonious. The other song with lyrics is, of course, the "Princess
Mononoke Theme Song", and this time the lyrics are in English. The
theme song performed by Sasha Lazard is uniquely beautiful and
completely absorbing. The song itself seems to be as original and free
willed as the description of the character herself in the liner notes.
All and all I must say this is a fabulous album you MUST go get it, at
very least for beautiful ambiance music that doesn't sound like it
belongs in an elevator.
