THE NEW YORK TIMES: "Speechless, a collection of Kuper's work, documents
a career dedicated to bringing the glee of a child's immersion in a
picture book to adult concerns like justice, romance and freedom of
speech. [Kuper] uses stencils with collage, watercolors or pencil
drawings to depict urban chaos in panels astonishing for their clarity
and concision..."
-- Elissa Lin Meyers, Book Review, Sunday Edition,
6/24/01
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: "Peter Kuper proves to be, in this retrospective
of his work, a passionately openhearted creator. Speechless includes
examples of his work ranging from political cartoons to diary
watercolors ... All feature fierce, vibrant imagery -- compositions that
quiver on the page." Grade: (A-)
-- Ken Tucker, 6/1/01
PAPER MAGAZINE: "a lavish hardcover collection Speechless more than
defines one artist's vision, it reinvents the comics medium."
-- Carlo
McCormick
PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY: "[Speechless] underscores Kuper's concerns about homelessness, censorship and the environment, as well as his sense of humor, eye for detail and a vividly graphic imagination ... Best of all, the book presents [a] thoughtful and creative life in graphic arts."
RAIN TAXI REVIEW OF BOOKS: "Speechless is an intensely satisfying book
because it reveals the full range of a comics artist whose talents
extend beyond comics. Kuper is that rare creature, a graphic novelist
who has managed to weather the changing fortunes of the comic-book
industry over the past two decades by relentlessly diversifying his
work. With [this] new release he is likely indeed to leave his growing
number of fans "speechless."
-- David Logan
KIRKUS REVIEW OF BOOKS: "Kuper's stylistic inventiveness and sophistication make [Speechless] an essential collection for students of graphic narrative and design."
BOOKLIST: "an impressively diverse career his politically driven
work appears seemingly everywhere, from the covers of Time and Newsweek
to local alternative weeklies so prolific that it would be easy to
think there must be several of him if it weren't for his distinctive
spray-paint-and-stencil technique wordless stories that communicate
entirely visually, hence the title of this generous sampling of a
decade's work an oversize, hardcover, full-color art book
-- at 20
bucks, bargain priced."
-- Gordon Flagg, American Library Association
THE PLAIN DEALER: "Peter Kuper is seldom truly speechless. He has a lot
on his mind, but he says it with silence, in jagged explosions of shape
and color on paper. Kuper is the man other artists call "the
cartoonist with a conscience." His angular and angry illustrations are
often disturbing and controversial, but never boring. ... His work
reflects his belief in the sanctity of human rights, his dedication to
the planet's ecology and his anger over the exploitation of workers in
America and abroad."
-- Michael Sangiacomo, A Cleveland, Ohio newspaper
... and inside the comics community:
TONY'S TIPS, COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE: "This large format hardcover is
nothing less than a celebration of the many and wondrous forms that
comics and illustration in general can take. It's an artistic diary of
an amazing and uncompromising talent. It's educational, inspirational,
and just plain fun to experience. In every sense, it is coin
exceedingly well spent."
-- Tony Isabella
WWW.THECOMICSTORE.COM: "Longtime fans will find themselves in Kuper
heaven with this handsome and thorough collection. Other will quickly be
won over by what is, in effect, a novel and unprecedented concept in
Comicdom: a volume devoted to a single artist that bares his soul while
exploring his portfolio. As you might imagine, there's a story behind
every brushstroke."
-- Ross Alvord
WWW.ICOMICS.COM: "Speechless is definitely one of those books that I'll
be picking up on a pretty regular basis to look through -- as well as
giving people copies for various birthdays and such during the year. Top
Shelf's books always look nice, but I think it's safe to say that
they've raised the bar another notch. Speechless is their first
hardcover book, but you'd think they've been doing them since day one."

Halloween has consistently remained a household name due it's it's cult like status as a film. There is a large audience who lives and breathes for anything Halloween related, and what better way to garner mass appeal than releasing the comic book along with the new movie during the month where Halloween dwells, October! With that, Chaos! has many cross-promotions planned to coincide with the release of the film. The popularity for the first Halloween comic solidified that entertainment licensed comics are a unique niche that has yet to reach its full potential. Many fans who have enjoyed the Halloween films (and horror films in general) have purchased the comic by Chaos!, and have now become new readers to the market. Anytime you can recruit new readers is a plus for comic book retailers. That phenomenon didn't just effect comic retailers but also high-profile retail outlets like Hot Topic and Spencers where the comic sold well.
Chaos! plans to top the success of prior Halloween comics, adding more thrills and gothic overtones in the third release. Written by Bram Stoker award winning author Phil Nutman, Halloween III is a new tale that takes place two years after Tommy Doyle was falsely incarcerated at the Smith's Grove asylum, as he escapes and returns to Haddonfield to try to finally solve the mystery of the Myers family curse. Despite news reports that Michael Myers (The Shape) is dead, Tommy is convinced the supernatural killer is still alive and that the Thorn cult can no longer control him. With the aid of his childhood friend, reporter Lindsey Wallace, Doyle prepares for his final confrontation with The Shape -- but the shocking truth may kill him! Look for it in stores October 10, 2001!

"I want to acknowledge that I said I would never bring back Evil Ernie and now here I am doing it," Pulido confided. "I nuked Evil Ernie and meant to keep him that way. I didn't want to bring him back the way other comic companies bring back dead characters, but something happened along the way.' Pulido asserts that during his frequent cross country convention appearances and through the mail, fans demanded Evil's return. "I am giving the people what they want."
What does Pulido say to all the readers who may complain about Evil's return? "I apologize to you if you feel this is a betrayal, but I am genuinely doing this for my readers. Where else can you get politically incorrect, ultra-violent stories like this in comics? No where. We are filling a need in comics."
What exactly will the story be? Well for starters Pulido is writing it and he promises a demented tale. "In this day and age of movie previews that give away the entire story, I will just say that I am out to write the most violent tale of my career. If I am going to bring evil back, I plan to do it in style. I have a long-standing reputation for writing over the top psychotic stories and on this one I will throw my heart and soul into it."
Evil Ernie returns #1 is scheduled to ship on October 31, 2001. More details to follow.
