Slow News Day

Dontcha just hate it when you go to the comic book shop and just about every title you read has a new issue out (with a lot of series I read, this is a miracle), so you snap them all up, rush home to read them, and then they're all dissapointing? It was one of those months.

Anyway, the one new comic I picked up this month was Slow News Day by Andi Watson. While not a bad comic, like Breakfast After Noon it simply failed to measure up to the standard set by Skeleton Key and Geisha. Maybe it's wrong of me to judge someone's work based on their past work, but hey, I'm a mean nasty critic, I can do whatever I want!

SND (as it shall henceforth be abbreviated as, for I am feeling lazy today) is published by Slave Labor Graphics. It tells the story of Katharine Washington, an American woman who for some reason decides to spend the summer working as an intern on an English paper. This small-town paper is published once a week and only has 1 reporter, whom Katharine works with. The first issue, which I picked up this month, pretty much just sets the stage and has a bit of good ol' Brit-American bickering over things such as sports.

My biggest complaint is that Andi seems to be giving into the same laziness that makes me abbreviate the book's title... I've noticed his art getting more and more simple. Now, I admit, maybe it isn't laziness, but it seems to have less and less lines each time. I liked his style in Geisha, but I'm really not sure if I like how it looks in SND.

Because I'm running out of comics to buy and I like supporting people whose past work I've enjoyed, I'll likely continue to pick this book up. After all, I should *probably* take a break from comics that simply feature people beating each other up in all sorts of amazingly bloody ways (insert shameless plug for Blade of the Immortal, which I will probably review soon to make the people who made me read it happy).

In short, if you prefer real-life stories over action, adventure, and sword fights, SND would be a good choice at your next comic run, otherwise you may want to reconsider.
