Toy Story by Mathew Bredfeldt

Toy Chest #13

Another month, another new series of information to fill you in on. As always you can e-mail me at the address above with ideas for articles, questions or comments.

Picking up on the Star Wars information that I have been posting for the past several months, here's a rundown on things. The B-Wing should be available in your local Target store. I've seen it and I have mixed feelings about it. Having owned it in the original B-Wing from the Return of the Jedi series, it does not seem to do it justice. My first problem with it is that it costs $40. $40? That's ten dollars more than I paid for the Y-Wing fighter that was also a Target exclusive. The only way I would pay that much is if it had some other feature than an exclusive figure. The original B-Wing did not come with an exclusive figure, but it had landing gear (which I think the new one has) and sound effects. The other problem I have with it is that it comes with an exclusive pilot. Now lets think back to when the original line came out; when a vehicle came out, there was a figure that was carded separately that you had to buy. Now instead of having to buy it separately, they include it and jack up the price ten dollars. I'm torn, though. I'm collecting the figures and vehicles that they produce for the new line that were produced in the original lines from 1977-1985. The B-Wing was part of that line, and I really am trying to justify the price to myself.

While on the subject. It looks like some places up north and overseas have already gotten the Toys R Us exclusive TIE Interceptor. I have not seen it in person like I have with the B-Wing. It will probably cost over $30 because of the "exclusive" figure. Here's a clue for the exclusive figure. It is a TIE Pilot figure with jointed knees. That's the only thing that is different. The TIE Interceptor does not even have the sound effects. My local Toys R Us store still has figures from the last line of The Phantom Menace (mostly Qui-Gon and Darth Maul), and barely two pegs of the Power of the Force Figures (all of them being Leia Bespin Escape). They have not even finished their huge reset yet, so I probably will not see them until some time in October. I probably will get one if I can find one.

Some other Star Wars related news. There will be a 12-inch Luke Skywalker on a speeder bike exclusive to Target stores. I guess this is a follow up to the one they did last year with the 12-inch Biker Scout with Speeder Bike. Look for this some time in fall. There will also be one more set of 3.75" figures released this year. Look for a Battle Damaged Darth Vader, Luke Skywaker X-Wing Pilot (less bulked up than the one they released in the beginning), Shmi Skywalker, Obi-Wan in Jedi Armor (from Episode 1) and yet another Han Solo variation this time with Stormtrooper belt. Also a little birdy told me that a new line with the likes of the FX-7 droid and Ketwol is or should be out soon. Looks like I need to start making room on my Star Wars wall for a few more slots.

Now on to other non rant related news.

McFarlane Toys has put out his line of figures based on some current NFL players. Look for Randy Moss, Eddie George, Emmitt Smith and Edgerrin James. If I had any interest in these figures (which I don't) and wanted to get the one from Dallas (which I don't) then I would never ever find the Emmitt Smith figure. The figures can be posed in a signature pose, stand six inches tall, and have a stand. Look for them this month.

Our intrepid editor's husband e-mailed me a picture of the new He-man figure that is going to come out in 2002, and I think it should still be available on the site if you want to see it. Anyway, it looks like they plan to have a whole series of these figures. Starting in Spring 2002, they will have the first wave of figures. Look for new versions of He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Stratos, Skeletor, Mer-Man and Beast Man. All of these figures will have some special function like He-Man will have a punching action and Skeletor will have a sword slashing action.

It's about time that the game Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64 got it's own figure line. BBI is making two 12 inch figures of the games main character Joanna Dark. One will be dressed in her battle gear and armor with all sorts of weapons, and the other will be a standard catsuit like outfit. They look nice and if I can find one than I might get one.

Playmates is putting out another Treehouse of Horror playset. Coming out in time for Halloween, this set will include Kang and Kodos from numerous Treehouse of Horror episodes and a Homer figure as well as the playset will be based on the bridge of their spaceship. It should be out some time in October.

Jakks Pacific has lots more on the horizon for the WWF license. Look for the 12 series of figures to be out soon. This one will include Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Undertaker, Big Show, Chris Jericho and The Rock. There will also be a fourth series of Rebellion figures. Look for the likes of Lita, X-Pac, Chris Benoit, Triple H, Billy Gunn and Edge. The finishing moves series is on its fourth incarnation featuring Steve Austin vs. The Rock, Edge vs. Kane (when did this happen?) and Buh Buh Ray Dudley vs. Lita. The real scan process has really improved the quality of these figures and I hope that they improve it in the future.

That's all for this month, there will be more next month.
