Bryan Talbot and Dark Horse recently put out a CD ROM
with all of the Heart of Empire series, all of the
Adventures of Luther Arkwright series and pages upon
pages of commentary by Bryan Talbot about Heart of
Empire. Its all in html and is both PC and Mac
compatible.
To be perfectly honest, I havent finished reading it,
my schoolwork has been extensive this month, but Ive
read most of it. And what I have read has been
absolutely fabulous. The anecdotes told in the
commentary are absolutely hilarious. The history is
truly fascinating. Ive had a wonderful time reading
all of it. Talbot talks about art, his philosophies,
the in-jokes, back history, you name it. Im an art
and history buff and Ive learned tons of things I
never even thought about before. Talbot shows
construction lines in his works. He also talks about
all sorts of different art techniques and doesnt lose
you while talking about them. You dont have to be
able to draw to understand and appreciate what hes
talking about. My only art skill is the fine art of
the stick figure. You can read the whole Heart of
Empire story on CD ROM and then go through the
commentary (not in one sitting, unless youre a mutant
super-speed reader ). This CD is wonderful, funny,
and educational. I HIGHLY recommend it. My only
problem is that I wish the Adventures of Luther
Arkwright had been scanned in at high resolution so
you could read it, too. However, every page of it is on
the CD and the art can be seen perfectly with the
scans they have there.
Now let me review why you should go buy this:
- Its got really funny stories in it.
- You can learn a lot of interesting history and learn about art.
- Its got lots and lots of REALLY REALLY gorgeous art and a fascinating story.
- Its a unique chance to glance into the mind of a creative genius.
