Great X-pectations by Jason M. Bourgeois

Unlimited X-Cess

I’ve got a few things to get through here this month, so let’s just get right to it, shall we?

First off, Mark Powers is gone! Fired! Removed! Woooohooooo! For longtime readers of this column, it is well known that I feel he is the root of many problems in the X-Books these days, so this comes as most welcome news. It’s even better than Joe Casey being fired.

Now, I’d just like to say, I’ve never met the guy, and don’t hate him, just greatly dislike his editing style. I’ve seen a lot of folks on message boards insulting the man personally, and while I’m glad he’s not editing the books anymore, I have nothing against the guy himself. He’s just a crappy editor. The personal attacks are one of the things I hate about the internet actually, but that’s another rant, for another time. And probably another column.

Unless of course the attacks are against Lobdell and Liefeld, those are understandable, and well warranted.

And this is my fourth anniversary of doing this! Yikes! I’m actually starting to run out of ideas to complain about. I may have to start writing pieces looking back at the good ol’ days, since I’ve said almost everything I care to say about the current books. Damnit, Marvel, start sucking again! Please? Although, removing Mark from power (Heehee...) is a great anniversary gift.

Now, showing how much I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel, I’m going to rant about X-Men Unlimited.

Pathetic, huh?

Is there really a place for this title? It’s now changed directions, and editors, more times than I care to count. Currently, we’re getting a few stories an issue, none of which have a chance to properly develop a story. So, we get several stories that go nowhere, with occasionally nice art, and once in a while, a fun little tale. Not quite worth the $3.50 they’re charging us, really.

In the next few months, the title gets another new direction, which will see the book doing only one story, with one writer, with numerous artists working on it. Still, I suspect while the stories may improve in quality, they’ll still just be throwaways.
This title has been going for about six or seven years now. It’s never done much of anything, and they’ve tried almost everything they can with the book. Maybe, just maybe, it’s time to put the old girl to rest, and move on to other projects. This title barely turns up on anyone’s radar, it’s never a must-have, and it’s just full of stories you CAN live without.

Somehow, I suspect they’ll keep dragging out the dead horse and beating it until it stops coughing up quarters though.

Oh well, that’s about all for now. If you will excuse me, I’m off to celebrate.
