Random Thoughts by Chris Reid

Here it is, another month of Random Thoughts!

First, I must say that Spinner is a wonderful thing. What does this have to do with Gaming, you say? Well, it has a bit. I’ve heard so many new bands that I never would have on the normal radio through Spinner that it amazes me. I have a list of cds I want to buy that I’ll never complete. In any case, I came to a startling realization, something that might be obvious to some, but wasn’t to me: Music is a great tool for roleplaying. Now, I don’t use music very often when I run games (it’s distracting in-person, and online, I have no guarantee that they have access to that music) . . . but I’ve been using it as a tool lately to develop games. I created a BESM campaign completely based off of a Faith and the Muse song called "Patience Worth." I’m starting to think of some songs as just condensed stories . . . just add plot, and you have a game!

The Virus Spreads: A d20 report.

This is Chris Reid, with Collectortimes.com, live from somewhere online. We’ve just received news that yet another game has fallen to the d20 system, a venerable game by the name of Call of Cthulhu. I’m here with AJ Reardon, an amateur roleplayer.

Me: When did you first hear about this calamity?

AJ: The other day, I was in Borders Bookstore, looking for the new George RR Martin book . . . and there it was . . . on the d20 shelf. It was *sniff* horrible!

There you have it, folks. It seems that this might be spreading to epic proportions.

I’ve recently signed up for the Star Wars Galaxy beta-test. It looks like a pretty good game, despite a few . . . well . . . changes they made to the Star Wars universe in order for it to translate well to an MMORPG. I’ll let you know more if I get a chance to play it. One thing’s for sure: It can’t be worse than the Star Wars pen and paper game. I hope the Borg . . . errr . . . d20 system gets it next.

I’d just like to take a second and say how great Blade of the Immortal is. It’s a manga put out by Dark Horse (at least, the English version), and has some of the best artwork and story that I’ve ever seen in a comic. Yeah, there’s a bit of gore, and some…well…fairly adult scenes. This neither detracts nor makes up the story. It’s part of it, as is many other things. Hiroaki Samura is my hero. I am not worthy.

I recently finished a book called Everything’s Eventual. It really is, and so is the book. Check out my review in the book review section.

That should be it for this month. I’ll leave you with two pieces of advice:

It’s hard to find sunglasses that fit if you have three eyes.

It’s better to aim before you fire, than after.

I’ll try to have something special for you guys next month.
