Doug Deever Dumpster Diver is not your run of the mill comicbook. It’s a great story about what happens to a young man when he’s told he’s nothing but garbage by both his mother and society. The narration for the story is done as a voice-over and is a news magazine article about Doug and children like Doug. Doug was thrown out of his house into the garbage that was his yard when he was a child by his abusive mother. Doug made a home and a life for himself out of the trash. The day his momma dies, Doug is finally free of her, but he has troubles dealing with the real world. He has a fascination with garbage. It’s like a comfort blanket. It’s the only friend he’s ever known. The story from there goes on to deal with how Doug functions in a world that still thinks of him as trash. It’s a very poignant, heartfelt, and even funny story. Russ Kazmierczak tells this very serious story in a great tongue in cheek fashion. It’s quirky, fun to read, and actually very easy to relate to.

The art for this comic is also very different. I’ve seen comics that were done in full photography with photo shopped in word balloons and special effects, and I’ve seen normal comics which are completely illustrated. This book is actually a combination of drawing and photography. It’s gives the book a very unique look and feel.

Everyone should definitely give this book a try. You can pick it up www.kocomix.com. You should also stay tuned for next month’s interview with the creators of Doug Deever Dumpster Diver. They’re very interesting gentlemen, and I think you’ll enjoy what they have to say.
