Toy Chest

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a great beginning to 2003. Here’s my make up for not giving you the news last month. As always comments, questions, ideas or anything else can be sent to the e-mail address above. Just take out the no spam part and you should be able to get a hold of me.

First up this month is Toynami. They are the creators of the very expensive, but well-done Veritech Masterpiece line. They are continuing that line by adding masterpiece versions of the Alpha fighters from the Invid invasion storyline. Start looking for these in the summer of this year. They are also mulling over whether or not to do versions of the of the Zentraedi and Invid forces as well. I think Robotech fans should write them and let them know we want them to be made. I for one, would like to see an Officers Battle Pod done in this fashion.

Toynami is also planning on releasing action figures of Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the 1960’s. Look for the Herculoids some time in the next few months, Thundarr the Barbarian in the summer, Birdman with Avenger in June and Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt in August.

DC Direct has a lot in store for their collectors in 2003. First is the threesome of sixties styled Batman, Robin and Batgirl. Also, look for figures from Kingdom Come series along with Joker, Cyborg Superman, Doomsday, a comic inspired Supergirl and a three pack of figures of the Birds of Prey. These will start trickling onto store shelves some time in the spring.

For those of you who collect the Superfriends two packs there are two more headed your way in May. The first two pack is of Aquaman and his archenemy Black Manta, and the other is a two pack of Green Lantern and Sinestro.

Palisades Toys is putting out their next two series of Muppets action figures is the spring and summer. Series 4 is due out in spring and has Rizzo the rat, Dr. Julius Strangepork, Link Hogthrob and Samuel Arrow (Sam the Eagle from Muppet Treasure island). There will also be a playset based on the Pigs in Space skit from the Muppet Show with First Mate Piggy. Series 5 due in the Summer will have Gonzo in a purple suit, Policeman Fozzie, Muppet Newsman and Pepe the Prawn. The playset will be the Electric Mayhem Bus with Janice.

Art Asylum is putting out Classic Star Trek action figures. These are due out in Fall 2003 and will include Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura and a Gorn. The second line due in late fall 2003 will include different versions of Kirk and Spock, Sulu, Chekov and baddie Khan. Along with the figures will be role-playing items for the first set and ships of the Enterprise in the first set as well as a USS Reliant in the second set.

Playmates toys is coming out with their whopping 11th figure line this month for the Simpsons line. Look for the Blue haired Lawyer, Kirk Van Houten, Rainier Wolfcastle, Gil the salesman, a "Plow King" version of Barney Gumble and Larry Burns. The playset for this wave will be a Courtroom with Judge Snyder.

Toy Biz is coming out with their third and fourth lines for The Two Towers. In series three there will be Aragorn, Galadriel, Twilight Ringwraith, Prolog Elf Warrior, Frodo with Light up Sting and a two pack of Merry and Pippin. Series four will have Helms Deep Legolas, Sam in Mordor, Armored King Theoden, Gollum, Boromir, Gimli and Strider. Series three and four are due out in spring. Due out now is a set of four 12-inch figures. Look for Legolas, Bilbo, Ringwraith and Treebeard the Ent.

Playmates toys is unleashing their new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Look for figures of Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Splinter, Shredder and a Foot Soldier. A set of three vehicles is also due out, the Sewer Soldier, Shell Cycle and the Battle Shell (a take off of the old turtle van.). All of these are due out now. In July there will be a second wave of figures. Look for Casey Jones, April O’Neil and Draak (a new character that is a right hand man to Shredder.) There will be two more waves of figures out by the end of the year bringing the line up to sixteen figures.
