Damn this man. He has written yet another novel that I can’t put down. Mr. McDevitt has a breakneck style of writing similar to Michael Crichton, but far more polished.

This may be his best novel to date. The main character is Dr. Kimberly Brandywine. Years ago, her older clone "sister" Emily disappeared under mysterious circumstances after a mission to search for other living beings in the universe. Kim was busy in her life doing fundraising for an institute who funds scientific projects when she hears from her old college professor, Sheyel Tolliver. Apparently Dr. Tolliver’s great- granddaughter was on the same mission as Emily, and she had called Dr. Tolliver on her return and informed him that they had found extra terrestrial life. Shortly thereafter, she too, mysteriously disappeared. Dr. Tolliver also speculated that they had brought some kind of creature back with them, due to odd sightings in the area of the Severin Valley. He encourages Kim to look into her sister's mission.

Kim initially writes her old professor off as a conspiracy nut, but due to her past relationship with him, she starts to look into it, and into the events immediately after the crew’s return. This leads her to some amazing discoveries as the mystery unfolds. There’s romance, suspense, adventure, and horror all incorporated skillfully in this tale. The ending is satisfying, too, well worth the hours I spent all night getting to it. Another excellent yarn crafted by Mr. McDevitt.
