This could almost be one of Elizabeth Moon's "Heris Serrano" novels . . . for about half a page . . . then it takes an extreme left turn and heads for the wild blue yonder! I was loving every minute of it!

Kylara Vatta is one of the top cadets at her local space academy. In the first chapter, she gets kicked out when someone she thought was a friend figuratively stabs her in the back. Upon arriving home she lets her father, the shipping magnate, convince her to go to work for him as a rookie starship Captain.

Of course, this isn't quite as foolhardy as it seems. A seasoned and trusted crew is there to surreptitiously keep an eye on her. And Daddy has a few tricks up his sleeve. Truth is, he really expects her to run off half-cocked and try to make a little extra money on the side. Dear old Dad wants her to get all of her mistakes out of the way early so he can put her to some real use. Too bad nothing goes according to plan . . .

Elizabeth Moon is really great at getting all of the little details right when it comes to personal interactions. She knows how to make the ship-board details realistic. And, as usual, the action is non-stop. This series looks to be every bit as good as the Familias Regnant novels. I don't know how I'm going to wait for the sequel!

'Til Next Month,
Happy Reading
