The story in this book has mostly appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction magazine.
I did not have all of the issues, so I was missing part of the story. Of course, Allen
Steele is always a treat anyway, but I found that the editing was so good that it was
really hard to tell which parts had been re-written. Better yet, it really reads like
a novel, rather than a serial.
The earliest part of the story was published in January 2001. A group of rebellious
scientists devise a plan to steal the first interstellar colony ship. Like many emigrees
before them, they seek a new life far from the oppression that they see at home.
Because of the sacrifice of a few of their number, the rest manage to escape and set
a course for a large moon around a gas giant circling 47 Ursae Majoris. That moon is
named Coyote. The tale of how they get there, the founding of their settlement, and
their trials in the new country comprise the remainder of the book.
Frankly, this one is just too good to give much away. Simply wonderous things
happen . . . tragic things happen . . . human things happen to these people. When its
finally over, you hate to see it end. You know you will miss all of the folk you have
met along the way.
The blurb on the back calls this book, "An homage to wonder, hope and determination . . ."
It is all that -- but even more, its damn good literature!
'Til Next Month,
Happy Reading
