Plati-What?

by Gwynn Grandy

When I pick up an Anime I have no idea what it's about or what the title means, sometimes I come up with favorites like Airmaster, or Ikkitousen. Platinumhugen Ordian would have been better left lying there. It turned out to be a Mecha, like far too many Anime series. I swear the creator's train of thought must have gone: "I can't think of a plot idea, what should I do? I know, I'll do a show about robots blowing each other up, and refuse to explain anything except in small pieces, so people will keep watching if only to find out what on earth (or in space) is going on. It worked for Evangelion, it'll work for me!"

The 1st episode was rather confusing, full of what are either flashbacks or premonitions. The second episode involved more flashbacks and more confusion. And more characters to be confused about. I liked a couple of the characters so I watched a few more episodes in hopes of clearing some of the mysteries up. Yuu is the main character, who is followed around by the rather immature Lanna. There's some lady who's trying to kill the recruits as far as I can tell. She might be related to the main character. There's the guy who's a killer on the battlefield and rather timid in person. And there's the girl who emerges from a cocoon and spits glowing liquid, all without disturbing her lipstick. I gave up watching the series a few episodes after they killed my favorite character.

Maybe it's because the subtitles were poor translations. The italics were a particularly irritating touch. Maybe it was a cultural misunderstanding. Maybe it was just a crappy storyline. But nine episodes later I just have a lot of questions, such as who is the girl with blue hair and wings in the intro song? Does she really exist, or is she just there as fan service? The only thing I actually learned is that the robots, otherwise known as Rimuhyuu Guns, make people act insane, and turn green.

I still have no idea where the title comes from or what it means, but I don't think I care anymore.
