This month I've decided to deviate from my normal toy column and post an
opinion column.
I'm not big on opinions about things that might be declared important like
politics, religion or anything so mature. This is a magazine about
collecting things and I guess I could do something about that, but that is
for another time. This time I want to talk about the sad, sad state of
affairs that collectable card gaming and miniature gaming is in.
You see, back in 1995 I started playing collectable card games with Magic
The Gathering and the Star Trek the Next Generation CCG. Since then I tried
many other games such as Tomb Raider, Rage and Raw Deal. I even left those
games for a while to play collectable miniatures games like Mage Knight and
Hero Clix. I've since come back to play the Star Trek Second edition CCG and
the Lord of the Rings TCG, but now my interest in those two games are
waning.
You want to know why? I'll tell you why.
It's the gamers who play these games. Sure there are a lot of people out
there that play these games that are okay Joe's, but there are putzes out
there that post on game bulletin boards for these games that are complete
A-1, Grade A Assholes. That right I cussed, and that is something that does
not come out of me very often.
I don't care how much of a badass you think you are, bringing a smoke
machine and wearing a replica WWE belt, does not make you the Shit no
matter where you go. I don't care if you are doing it for the intimidation factor;
there are people out there that do not think that is vary sporting. The only
place a smoke machine belongs is a special effects department in a grade B
movie studio, and the only place a replica WWE belt belongs is at a WWE
event.
Then there are the players out there that play only for one thing; the win.
These people will find every cheap and cheesy way to win the game. I hate
these kinds of players because they take the fun out of playing a game. It
seems like this kind of mentality has permeated every game out there.
Most of the time the cheap and cheesy strategies are easily solved through
rules changes, but most of the time it's already too late because the damage
has already been done. Players like me have been driven away by the players
that use cheap and cheesy strategies, and short of memorizing every figure
put out and figuring out what to use against the cheesy player you have 0
fun.
To me games are meant to be played and all the players should have a good
time.
That's about all I have for now. I'm so frustrated about this whole
situation that I can't think straight.
If you have any ideas for me to do more articles, by all means e-mail me at
the address above. Just remove the nospam from the address.
