THE VILLAGE
One of the things M. Knight Shamyalan is reknown for is his twist endings. Movies that keep you guessing until the end. In a way, this is very unfortunate as I think people will lose sight of much of this movie in the attempt to "figure it out". Despite beautiful scenes and characters with substance, it's easy to lose track of any of that if you're trying to absorb the surrounding details which will unlock "the key".
That being said, this movie does have a few twists and turns, it's about a colony of puritan-like people living in the middle of a large patch of woods. The idea is that they are protected by the woods and the strange creatures that live in them. But something goes wrong. Another misconception ( and this one due largely to the marketing ) is that this is a horror film. It isn't. So just sit back, relax and watch an interesting movie!
ALIENS VS PREDATOR
Now here's a tough one. I DID have high hopes for it, but I'm not sure why. I mean how much hopes can one have about something like this? While it is a throwback to the old Godzilla vs. King Kong type of movie, it has been done with modern monsters that I love, in both cases. To tell the truth, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. They put together a decent story. The real problem lies in massive plot holes and character facts that the big fans of these two monsters are going to rile against ( and let's face it, who's going to see this movie if not for the big fans of the monsters? ). For example, Alien eggs implanted in a human seem to take minutes to hatch. In all other movies, it was a matter of days. Suffice it to say, this was a good "popcorn" movie. Sort of a fun, fast paced, action monster movie. But don't go looking for any hard sci-fi here.
