WHAT I CARE TO SEE

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

This was a pure work of Douglas Adams. Okay, not that pure in that it went through several revisions after his death. But pure enough that he had a major hand in writing the script, and it had the weird mix of abstract science fiction and humour that the book and TV series and comic books and even the HHGTTG Towel all had. I truly had fun watching it.

And to the naysayers. Those that would take it apart saying this or that is not like the book. Mr. Adams said himself of the different incarnations that they were all "canon" and they were simply different parallel universes of themselves.

STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH
(At last the circle is complete )

When I was 4 years old, Star Wars: A New Hope was released in theaters ( at the time only Star Wars, of course.) A glorious day that would map out my life forever. My friend Jonathan and I must have watched it at least 100 times on his VHS machine when we were little, we literally wore out the tape till it was unwatchable. In 1999, I had the joy of experiencing a first screening of a Star Wars movie with my own children, and they even went in costume ( though we, the parents, did not.)

And guess what? I loved Episode I. Contrary to what many have found, it was pure Star Wars. It was a bit silly, high on the special effects, not always high on the dialogue. So what? That's how it always was! Over the last 20 years, people had developed some sort of cynical love for the old movies. Believing them to be great cinema, when they were really just really fun popcorn movies.

In any case, Episode 3 wraps all that up in ways that both sides should be happy with. It's very entertaining, but it's also dark and nasty. Granted the dialogue is clunky in a few places, but I only really had a problem with two points.

I found that the lead-up to Anakin's turning was perfect, the reasons he turns were acceptable, I think, from a fan standpoint. Knowing what we know about Anakin, all the facts were well put in place. But that point at which he decides was too... quick. It was like one second he's defending the way of the Jedi, the next, he's basically saying "Oh crap! Guess I'm a Sith then!"

The other was that Padme decided that she could not go on living because Anakin turned evil. Not just that, but she just gave birth to two twins, whom she cared about enough to name, and then passed on simply because she had no reason to live . . .

In the end, everything wraps up nicely tying up most of the loose ends between Episode 4 and the prequels. Complete with a little cameo from Chewbacca and quick views of Tantive IV ( The ship Leia is escaping in at the beginning of Episode 4 ), Mon Mothma and Moff Tarkin. Definitely a great way to cap off the saga and a sad day to see it all end.
