Common Foe #1

Review By Sidra Roberts Roman

Common Foe #1
Written and Created by: Keith Giffen and Shannon Denton
Artist: Jean-Jacques Pzialowski

This is a horror comic set during World War II. With that in mind, only, does the first issue make any sort of sense. It starts with the monster attacking on the battlefield. It gives you a brief flash of the soldiers and their names.

Then it flashes back to earlier that day and normal soldier stuff with some witty banter.

Now, perhaps I was just feeling ADD, when I read it, but it didn't make much sense to me the first time. I had to read it a second time to even really understand what was going on.

The art is very cool looking, but it is hard to tell characters apart at times. The characterization, at least in the first issue, is kind of lacking.

And aside from the witty banter, it's not really something I'd expect from a Keith Giffen comic, but perhaps I've just read too much of his superhero stuff.

Upon the second reading, I can see how the first part will relate to the second and how the title ties in. It should be interesting to see the details of how that happens. And what they do once they decide that they have to unite against their common foe.
