Serenity

Review By Sidra Roberts Roman

Serenity #1 and #2
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Story by: Joss Whedon & Brett Matthews
Script by: Brett Matthews
Art by: Will Conrad
Colors by: Laura Martin

I sent Zack to the comic shop to pick up my monthly Legion of Superheroes crack because I was working a twelve hour shift the day it came out. He came home with the two currently published Serenity comics. Apparently they're supposed to bridge the gap between the series and the movie, which comes out later this month.

The characterization is dead on with the series, but the art at times leaves much to be desired on all characters with the notable exceptions of Jayne and Shepard Book. Half of the time certain main characters like Mal, Simon or Anara take me a few second to actually figure out who they are. This is especially bad in the first panel concerning Mal in the first comic. Another thing that strikes me as poor in this comic is the use of things and people from the pilot. I recognize them, but I'm a big dork with a mind for useless trivia. Zack didn't recognize them without prompting from me.

Story arc is interesting, but I can't help but feel like this is somehow disconnected from continuity. It might be the shift of mediums from film to paper that does that, but it has that Elseworlds feel to it, and it's kind of a turn off because I know it's supposed to bridge the gap between the series and the movie. Additionally, I can't help but feel that this will simply just elaborate on the back story that sets up the movie, because they can't just use the comic to do so because I'm pretty sure the general public doesn't know that they exist. I certainly didn't until Zack came home with them.

Given that I already have two out of the three. I will probably pick up the third just to know how the thing ends, but if you haven't picked it up yet, I'd recommend you skip it. The movie's bound to make sense without it anyway.
