THE FOG
In this, the Age of the Remake, a John Carpenter classic has
been remade. Although the original was not Carpenter's best, it begs the
question ( YET AGAIN ) "Does this need to be remade??"... It reminds me
of kids thinking that black and white movies are "yucky". However, as remakes
go, it actually wasn't bad. Barring the WB-esque feel that Tom Welling
brought to the movie, the story was refreshed enough and had a couple of
cringe worthy moments enough to make the movie enjoyable. It certainly
wasn't reinvented to the degree that they reinvented The Texas Chainsaw
Massacre or Dawn of the Dead. But they did change the ending and the
story around enough so that it wasn't a lame shot-by-shot remake like
the Psycho remake.
WALLACE AND GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE RABBIT
First off, if you are a Wallace and Gromit fan to begin with,
stop reading and go see it. Period.
In this feature length episode starring Wallace and his overly
smart dog Gromit, we find the two working as humane pest control
removing rabbits from people's gardens ( only to "humanely" keep them in
their own basement ). Until Wallace decides to try and reprogram the
rabbits into not wanting to eat in people's gardens.... with dire
results!
The film is filled with imaginative puns and imagery that one
would expect from these two and was really just quite funny.
SAW II
Like Saw, the film follows the horrific exploits of the non-serial killer "Jigsaw" as he has been named by the media and police. Pitting people he feels need to be judged against gut wrenching devices and situations. The acting hasn't gotten a whole lot better since the first movie, but it is well compensated by a couple of original plot twists and truly cringe worthy moments. This follows the story of a cop ( Donnie Wahlberg ) who's hard on his luck. He finds himself in the middle of one of Jigsaw's plots by having his son kidnapped and placed in "the game". Without revealing too much, this one doesn't go as much into the psychology aspect of the first, but if you liked Saw's awesome gruesomeness , you should be pretty happy with this one as well.
