This is about a guy who joins the Marines and goes
to war.
It's a good movie but it's not what it's
advertised to be. If you think it's about the
current war or that there is a lot of politics,
fighting and bombing, think again.
The movie is directed by Sam Mendes, starring Jake
Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx.
Welcome to the Suck.
The movie is based on a true story and a novel. It
follows one young marine who enlists just prior to
the first Gulf War. He goes over to Kuwait to
fight. There are 2 main stories. One of his time
in Kuwait and what he does, the other about his
mental state and what serving overseas in the
military can do to somebody. A lot of it is
devoted to the girlfriends and wives that are
waiting for their return.
In short it's a whole lot of to-do about nothing,
but that nothing has a major effect on his psyche.
Thankfully they picked an actor that can express
the internal conflict without having to say a word
about it.
There are bits about politics within the movie.
Sadly it's mentioned but not explored. Among them
is going to war over oil. Bombs vs. Soldiers. The
safety of the soldiers, from equipment to medical
stuff. The programing of the soldier, the bullshit
they go through and how it affects them. Friendly
fire. Internal Revenge. Civilian casualties. Being
forced to tell the media bullshit and if that's
American or not and how being in the military
affects them long term.
It's a bit of an anti-war movie by being very
honest about the ugly side of war instead of
propagandizing how great the soldiers are in a war
zone.
Note: Women are rarely portrayed positively in the movie.
I won't tell you to run out and see it right away.
But it is a good movie with excellent acting and
directing. The story is mainly true and feels that
way too.
Recommended.
