I haven't had much time to work on this, and I'm sure it shows.
Anyway, I wanted to get something in for this month. This is another one
based on a contest entry, from this summer's contest.
Captain Marvel is one of the oldest names in comics. Going right back to the
Golden Age, various publishers have used the name for one kind of super-hero
character or other. The first time was in Whiz #1, with the original Big Red
Cheese, who transformed by saying the word "SHAZAM". Later, it was used by a
silly character who could break his body into pieces when he yelled "SPLIT".
Then, Marvel comics introduced a Captain Marvel, this time he was an alien
defector from a militaristic society. He died from cancer.
Then, probably to secure their trademark to the name, they introduced a new
Captain Marvel. This time, a human woman with powers and origin not
associated with the alien Captain Marvel. Her name is Monica Rambeau and
unlike the vast majority of Marvel heroes, she's not a New Yorker.
There are worse costumes, I know, but few of them on heroes and few that
lasted as long as this one has. In her origin story, when she converted to
energy the first time, her clothes disappeared, so she stole into a costume
shop and cobbled this thing together. Ugh. It's just ugly. It looks thrown
together by a guy, not a girl.
I didn't want to throw away every design element. The black starburst and
the sharp contrasting color scheme, if nothing else. I never liked the
pinkish tint to the light parts of the old costume, so lose that. Also the
mask.
With her energy powers, I wanted a color that was more "enegetic" than the
pinkish-white. Also, a two color scheme is boring. The yellow/gold and black
is bolder, the gray-white boots soften it up a little.
