This book is actually a very lengthy in depth
interview with Alan Moore over a wide variety of
topics, but mostly it covers writing and creativity in
depth.
Overall it's a very interesting read, especially for
someone interested in writing. It has a lot of little
hints, tips, and advice that aren't necessarily common
knowledge. These things are not, however, outlined in
the book in and enumerated list or anything of the
sort. In other words this is far from a "So, you want
to write comics", instructional manual. Mostly it is
Alan Moore pontificating, and doing it very well. In
between his stories and commentary, if you look, there
is a lot of stuff on the creative method and how to
help hone your own creativity. There's also a lot in
it about the history of Moore himself and the books
he's written over the years.
There were a few things that I was dissatisfied with.
One of those things is the cover art. It makes him
look like a serial killer. While I'm perfectly sure
this was intentional, it freaks me out some.
Additionally the foreword is a little too verbose and
unstructured, which makes it hard to get through. I
do, however, really like the book format employed for
this extended interview. One thing you typically see
in interviews is that they feel short and you don't
get a lot of information. If they are really long and
they're online, chances are you're going to have to
scroll down later to try to find where you were in
them. With the book formatting you can just pop your
bookmark in and start back right where you stopped.
It's a small portable size, so it would be easy to
take with you virtually anywhere.
If you're a fan of Alan Moore, I recommend checking
this out. If you're a writer, I strongly urge you to
pick up this book. If you're just curious about the
serial killer-esque picture, go to
