THE OMEN (remake)
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought to myself
"Why would ANYONE want to remake such a horror classic?!". Sure they had
redone other great horror classics like Dawn of the Dead and The Texas
Chainsaw Massacre. They'd also done a decent job. But there's something
about The Omen that was "just right" for that feeling of impending doom
and creepiness. It really didn't need a remake in any way. Not to
mention that it further shows Hollywood's dwindling sadness in its need
to recycle old stories.
That being said, it's horror, I loved the original, so we headed
out to see it. I've found that some of the better remakes have been
those that have at least tried to re-invent the story somewhat ( see
above ). Others like Night of the Living Dead and Psycho, have been more
lacking in this area with the former just changing enough things to make
it annoying, and the latter changing absolutely nothing and re-shooting
the movie shot-for-shot with different actors and in colour. This remake
gets awfully close to this type of remake. There is very little new or
different material here. From the first nanny hanging herself to Damien
at the birthday party to the way those who oppose him are killed ( with
*slight* variations ) it's pretty close to its original counterpart. Is
it a bad movie? No, they did do a good job of preserving the feel of the
original, but why preserve what's already good? Why did it need to be
done? I don't know. But at the very least they didn't kill it.
