Toy Chest

By: Mathew Bredfeldt Mathew_Bredfeldt@nospamhotmail.com

Summer is here and things are as hot as ever for the toy market, and with the summer convention season here things are bound to get hotter.

I have a question for everyone that reads this article this month.
E-mail me your response to this question, and that is: Convention Exclusives good or bad?
Email your responses to editor@collectortimes.com with "Convention Exclusives" in the subject line and she will make sure that I get them.

I'm going to take the bad side on this question and I'll tell you why.

First, there are some folks out there who are collectors and want these convention exclusives and do not have the means to get to San Diego for the ComicCon International or Chicago for Wizard World. They may have smaller more home grown conventions that do not offer Convention exclusives. So where does this leave this collector; going to some shady sellers web site or E-Bay where they have to compete with other collectors that want the same thing and probably have better resources at their disposal to get it?

Second, having to go to E-Bay does not automatically mean you will get what you are looking for. Sure, there may be someone pre-selling the chance to get one of these hot exclusives, but what if there is a shortage of the item they were looking for? I know this rarely happens, but take for example the pre-selling of the Galactus HeroClix figure that happened a few years ago. Some folks did not get the chance to get their Galactus because WizKids, at the cons, were having a lottery to see who could get the Galactus for that day. Then you were only limited to one per person, so if you had three orders of figures than you better have a pair of good friends who did not mind giving up their $100+ figure. If you missed out on all three days than you were at the mercy of the people who had one and were willing to sell it for an outrageous price. Lucky for me I managed to get Galactus that year and I have not played with him yet and probably never will, but it's something to sit and look at, and be amazed by the detail.

So let's face it, unless you are lucky enough to know someone who is going to one of these conventions and you have the means to pay them for their time plus the item that may be double what they cost in the store I highly recommend that you forget about getting the convention exclusives. Granted, there are a few exceptions such as Hasbro, and NECA that will have convention exclusives for sale on their web sites, but some folks will not have a credit card to order what they want from said site.

That's all for this month. As always all questions can be directed to my editor and she'll direct them to me. Look for about a 48 hour turn around on all questions. Answers to this month's questions can be pointed at my editor and then she'll get them to me. The best answers will be posted in next month's article.
