Toy Chest

By: Mathew Bredfeldt Mathew_Bredfeldt@nospamhotmail.com

It looks like we're spending another month together so lets get started. As always, questions, comments and article ideas can be directed at my editor and she'll make sure they get to me.

Since nobody e-mailed my editor about my convention exclusives question, I'm going to guess that most of you out there that read my article and did not have an opinion on it. I thought that was the whole point about the internet, everyone is entitled to an opinion and they can post it for all to see. I would not have censored you in any way (except maybe vulgar language), but other than that I would have posted your opinions. Oh well, I try something new and it goes over like a ton of bricks. I'm going to extend the question of the month one more month and if I get no replies than I'm dropping it and going back to the boring news report style that you all seem to like so much.

The question for this month is: If you could go back in time to the 1960's, 1970's or 1980's with $1000 in that decades twenty dollar bills; what would you purchase toy wise and ship to your past self? You cannot tell your past self who these are from and you cannot tell yourself to not open them because that would reveal too much about the future. Remember these are toys and deserve to be played with. You can tell your past self to take care of them the best that the past you can. The only other stipulation is that the past you will get them either on your birthday or at Christmas.

My answer: First I would go back to 1982 and purchase the entire first set of non-swivel arm GI Joes. That's only $25 (give or take).

Then to 1983 to get the Dragonfly XH-1, FANG, and Skystriker XP-14F as well as some of my favorite figures to go with them such as Airborne, Cobra Commander, Destro, Doc, Gung Ho and Torpedo.

Then to 1984 where I would get some of my favorite figures like Baroness, Duke, Firefly, Mutt & Junkyard, Ripcord; and vehicles Killer W.H.A.L.E., Rattler, S.H.A.R.C., and Water Moccasin. So far I have spent about 15% of my budget and I'm only going to 1985.

In 1985 is where all the careful planning goes straight to hell. Why, because the monstrous USS Flagg comes out and spends 10% of the budget right off the bat as well as the Moray Hydrofoil, and some figures like Crimson Guard, Eels, Flint, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck, Tomax & Xamot.

1986 sees no slow down in purchasing because the Conquest X-30, Devilfish, Night Raven, Terror Drome, and Tomahawk. That's probably only 15% of the total cash out not including figures. The figures for this year are B.A.T., Beachhead, Dial Tone, Hawk, Leatherneck, Lifeline, Lowlight, Mainframe, Viper and Wet Suit.

1987 sees a slow down in vehicle purchasing, but another 10% go right out the window with the release of the Defiant Space Shuttle Complex as well as the Mamba, Sea Ray and Vector. The figures from this year are Crazylegs, Falcon, Law & Order, Maverick, Outback, Sneak Peek, Techno Viper and Tunnel Rat.

1988 sees more medium sized vehicles come out like the B.U.G.G., Phantom X-19, Skystorm X-Wing Chopper and Stellar Stiletto. Figures for this year are Astro-Viper, Charbroil, Hardball, Hit & Run, Hydro Viper, Lightfoot, Muskrat, Shockwave, Spearhead and Max.

1989 the final year, and I think I'm way over at this point, but who cares. The vehicles for this year are; Condor Z-25, F.A.N.G. II, Mudfighter and Thunderclap. The action figures for this year are Alley Viper, Annihilator, Countdown, Deep Six, Frag Viper, H.E.A.T. Viper, Night Viper, Snake Eyes and T.A.R.G.A.T.

As anyone who knows me knows, I really liked GI Joe when I was younger and my dream is to own all of these vehicles and figures one day. The three biggest expenses are going to be; the USS Flagg, The Terror Drome and Defiant Space Shuttle Complex. As you can see I'm a big Navy and Air Force guy and only one Army vehicle, the Thunderclap.

That's all for this month, I look forward to seeing a lot of responses in my e-mail box over the next month. The best ones will get posted in next month's article.
