|
On Sunday August 20, I had the extreme pleasure of attending an opening reception to meet and
greet these wonderful artists (most of whom I have meet before). Their works have appeared in The
New Yorker, Mad, Playboy, the Wall Street Journal, Reader’s Digest just to name a few. They have
originated or continue the work of Batman, The Lockhorns, The Phantom, Archie, Popeye, Casper,
Dondi, Beetle Bailey, Felix the Cat and a host of others. And of course, tons of books, graphic novels,
animations, greeting cards and gag cartoons are part of their prolific output.
This exhibit is really for everyone. No matter what your age, you will find something that will either
bring back a fond memory or create an absolutely new one. What really makes this show great is the
fact that younger generations can get a idea of what came before and the older generations can
appreciate once again what they cherished.
Mort Drucker Over 100 framed drawings are on display, with most in black and white and some in color. They vary in size from a single panel cartoon to a double-panel splash page.
During the event I had a chance to speak with artist Joe Edwards (creator of Lil Jinx) who talked about his time, when the "pencil was the key mode of transmitting thought to paper" He asked me to quote him on the following "I never worked a day in my life" - which is how you feel when you love what you do. He said he was "Honored to be in the show" and it truly was an honor to speak with him. And now, I must tell you about Regina Gill, Founder, President and Executive Director of the Great Neck Arts Center (GNAC). This vibrant women is the driving force, along with her wonderful staff, who works tirelessly on behalf of the Center. She told me that the center also function as a school with classes in art, ceramics, music, dance, drama, fencing, chess and film which are offered to students of all ages. Concerts are also held here, from classical to jazz. Of note, GNAC is affiliated with the Kennedy Center "Partners in Education". I also had the pleasure of talking with Georgia Value, Director of Development who worked on the Cartooning show about a year ahead of time. She said she worked with Mike Lynch (head of the organization of professional cartoonists called "Burnt Toast") and eventually over 40 Cartoonists were involved in the show. Georgia mentioned that many of the original works at the gallery will be for sale and that a portion of the Sales would benefit the not-for-profit GNAC.
