Miller and Mullet in Space #1
Story: Allan Turner & Ed Miller |
Miller and Mullet are clowns both in the comic book and in real life.
You will see them at conventions and store signings in full costume.
This is their premiere issue. This is an adventure/humor book that takes place in a planet hopping sci-fi future. The two clowns are a traveling act trying to get bookings and aren't above doing some shady things to try and advance their careers. Unfortunately, they are dealing with some shady characters and get set up in an illegal scheme. The clowns aren't particularly bright and we laugh at their stupidity. I think the series has the potential to be as good as Giffen and DeMattis' humor work, but it still needs some work. Some of the jokes work well, some do not. One of the biggest strengths is the back and forth banter between characters. They break the 4th wall at one point, but it was a very predictable joke. My biggest problem with the writing was one page which didn't flow with the story, leaving me to wonder if there was a printing error or something. What would really help this comic if it was fun to look at. The art is very dark and serious like in the midst of a humor book with some action in it. The panels are small at points, which works for getting a lot of plot and dialog in, but also makes it more tedious to read. There is a lot of detail crammed into those panels and the gray scale colour is dark. The art is not bad, with some bigger panels and less detail (or different subject matter) it would be more enjoyable. The final 3 pages are filled with art and the back page is a photograph of Miller and Mullet. I personally think the front cover would have been more eye catching if it were a close up photo of the real life Miller and Mullet in a silly pose. The production values of the comic are great. Glossy pages and cover all for the price of a standard Marvel/DC comic. With some tweaking here and there I think these two could do a decent comic book. As it is now, I give it a 4 out of 10 rating.
