Crank

Review by Christopher Coleman

Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) is a hitman in a bit of a quandary. He's been poisoned with a toxin that'll kill him if he doesn't keep his adrenalin pumping as fast as possible for as long as possible. Trying to find a way out, get revenge and explain the truth to his girlfriend (Amy Smart) are just some of the things he has to do while cranked out of his mind on Red Bull, cocaine, fighting, dangerous driving and more.

"Crank" is a completely insane action movie - imagine some of the craziest things you'd do, and then imagine a few more, double them, add two or three things that're crazier and you might cover half of what happens every few minutes in this movie. Ever seen a man in a hospital dressing gown steal a cop's gun, tease him with it, then steal his motorbike and take off? Perhaps in a video game. The movie's frenetic pace, action and even a lot of the scene transitions, not to mention the design of the opening and closing credits, all lend themselves to the idea that the movie is a giant video game. If so, it's certainly the most fun video game I've ever seen.

It's rare to have action that's exciting and funny at the same time (unless you're a fan of Hong Kong movies, perhaps.. hello, the early films of Jackie Chan), but this hits the bill.. even some of the soundtrack choices are pretty hilariously timed and fit the scenes well. Watch out for some amusing use of Harry Nilsson.

There's enough violence, gore, swearing, comedy, drug taking and general off-the-chainedness to satisfy even the most jaded of brainless action movie fans. About the only way I could possibly have improved this is to get rid of some of the flashy "I just bought Adobe Premiere" editing tricks towards the beginning of the movie.

Finally, for fans of "Deadwood", Mr Wu makes an apperance! HANG DAI!

8/10
