The Definition of Awesome:
Another Joe and Monkey Collection
By Zack Miller

Review by Sidra Roberts Roman

Last year at Wizard World Dallas I picked up the first collection of Joe and Monkey. This year when my mother went, she picked up the new one because she knew I would like it, and she was right!

The Definition of Awesome is an amazing collection that shows a lot of growth as a cartoonist. There is still, of course, Joe, his monkey, and Kleptobot, but there is also Joe's mom and his little sister, Megan.

There are several new running gags through the book. The bucket and the letters to celebrities are amongst my favorite of those, though the excessive use of the word awesome gets mega spiffy points, too. The art amazingly has gotten more stable and consistent between books. This is impressive because I thought it was very solid in the last collection.

I think what I like most about Joe and Monkey is the inanity combined with actual storytelling. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it doesn't try to be pretentious, which is a trapping that some webcomics and webcartoonists fall into as their comic goes on.

Last year I recommended the Joe and Monkey collection as a Christmas gift if you have that special someone geeky in your life. This year, I am proud to recommend The Definition of Awesome as a perfect gift for that someone dorky/nerdy/spazzy/geeky on your Christmas list. It is a real hoot and well worth every penny.

If you want to see the awesomeness for yourself check it out at: http://www.joeandmonkey.com/ The book is available through the store at the website. Go pick it up today!
