Toy Chest

By: Mathew Bredfeldt Mathew_Bredfeldt@nospamhotmail.com

First up this month are the toys for the new Spider-Man movie due out in May. Apparently they have decided to release the toys about 6 weeks before the movie comes out. Look for versions of the Spidey villains from the previous movies as well as the new movie. I'm going to avoid spoilers in this article since I know most of us want to be spoiler free for movie three.

For those of you with an I-Pod and like those cute I-Animals that Tiger Electronics is putting out, there will be a SPI-DOG out soon. It is a Spider-Man colored version of the company's I-Dog.

The Transformers movie, coming out on July 4th this year, has toys coming out on May 2nd. There will movie versions of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Megatron and Starscream. There will even be Transformers based on normal everyday things like a pair of binoculars, digital camera and cellular phone.

Marvel Toys is putting out a line called "Legendary Comic Book Heroes." Wave one will be out in August and the second wave will be out in September. You would think that with a line called "Legendary Comic Book Heroes" they would focus on Marvel characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, the X-Men and Fantastic Four. You know character's that came out between the 1940's and 1960's. Instead they are releasing action figure versions of Image, Dark Horse and other non-big two comic publishers. In the first wave there will be Superpatriot, Witchblade, Judge Dredd, Savage Dragon, Madman and Ripclaw. In Marvel Legends fashion, they will each come with a part to form a giant Pitt character. The second series will include O'Brien (of Monkeyman & O'Brien fame), Darkness, Judge Death, Star, Striker and Marv. Each of these figures will come with a part to assemble a Monkeyman figure.

DC Direct has a series of four statues due out some time soon based on some of the female characters in the DC universe. I'm all for this, except DC decided to go the Manga route for their look. I understand that the kids enjoy the Manga/Anime these days, but these are characters made in America for American audiences, so why go the big eyes route? The four female statues are Supergirl (who make's the last Ho of Krypton look fully clothed in comparison), Batgirl (way to much gold in that costume), Catwoman (in movie-esque outfit), and Power Girl in classic chain breaking pose.

This summer, Hasbro is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 3 ¾ inch GI Joe line with a special release of twenty-five 3 ¾ inch figures of the line's more popular figures. The names of the first ten figures were revealed in Toyfare. They are: Baroness, Cobra Commander, Cobra Trooper, Destro, Duke, Gung-Ho, Roadblock, Scarlett, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. They probably will not put in some of my favorites from the line like Blowtorch, Mutt & Junkyard, Law & Order, Doc and Lifeline.

Quick Hits

Mattel is putting out something called Battleague due out in July. The figures for this game are based on DC Comics characters like Superman, Batman, Darkseid and Green Lantern. They are mounted on bases similar to the Attacktix line by Hasbro from the pictures I've seen.

Diamond Select Toys is putting out a line of Star Trek Original Series Mego Style figures. They will be put out in two packs of one of the original aliens (Romulan, Klingon, and Andorian) and one of the three from the landing party (Kirk, Spock, McCoy).

Diamond Select Toys is putting out a series of Transformers Statues that look like the characters look in the cartoon. The big seller will be the giant sized Omega Supreme that looks all kinds of awesome.

Questions of the Month

Here are a couple of questions for you to ponder and e-mail me about. Just put Living Dead Doll's/Battle Beasts in the subject line.

Why do people like the Living Dead Doll's line by Mezco?

Do you remember the Battle Beast's line put out by Hasbro in the late 1980's?

Thanks for reading. Did you miss me?
