GRINDHOUSE
Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez set out to make a tribute
to the heydays of Grindhouse theatre and they've completely succeeded
with this masterful "double header". The idea of this movie is to
re-create the old style feel of B-movies played back to back of the 70's
and early 80's, complete with an intermission feature other schlock
exploitation films ( faked and directed by other famous horror directors
).
I have not been as entertained by any movie as I've been
entertained by these in a very long time. The first feature, Planet
Terror by Robert Rodriguez, is a take on the old style zombie outbreak
movie, but taken to such ridiculously gory extremes, one can't help but
laugh out loud. I just loved it!
Death Proof was sort of clever. Built a lot more on dialogue as
many of Tarantino's films are, it follows the story of a grizzled old
stuntman who gets kicks out of killing people with his car. Though
entertaining, with a great ending, I found this one to be quite a lot
more drawn out and really longer than it needed to be.
But the icing on the cake, the cherry on top are the three
"trailers" that are sandwiched between the two features. "Werewolf Women
of the SS", "Don't!" and "Thanksgiving". These were so hilariously
amazing, that I would run to a theatre to watch these if they were ever
produced for real.
Editor's note: Oddly enough, the BBQ place in Planet Terror is my great great grandfather's mill. It's a historical mill in Luling, Texas. -- Sheryl
