Sunshine

Directed by Danny Boyle
Written by Alex Garland
Starring Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, Hiroyuki Saneda, Michelle Yeoh

"So if you wake up one morning and it's a particularly beautiful day, you'll know we made it."

Bad news, kids, the sun's going out. Worse news, kids, the first mission to reignite it failed. Better news, though, this movie chronicles the wacky, madcap adventures of the second mission. The Icarus II, sent seven years after the first abortive mission, is captained by Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada) and amongst the crew is the physicist responsible for the design of the stellar bomb, Capa (Cillian Murphy).

The last time Alex Garland and Danny Boyle teamed up, we ended up with the rather entertaining "28 Days Later", a revitalization of the 'zombie' genre that felt fresh and exciting, and unfortunately for "Sunshine", the 'fresh' part doesn't really apply here. "Sunshine" is very much a retread of previous efforts, particularly "Event Horizon" and "2001: A Space Odyssey". This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. No doubt many of you reading this are fans of the sci-fi genre, and realize that expecting something revolutionary, unique and interesting is a fool's errand.

If you can get over the fact that "Sunshine" provides almost nothing new whatsoever, you can embrace some great performances (especially considering how shallow most of the characters are, and remain throughout the movie), occasionally exciting action, terrific special effects and a great soundtrack by Underworld and John Murphy. I doubt I'd bother to pick up the DVD of this movie when it's released, but I will be getting the soundtrack. Faint praise for a movie review, I realize.

7/10
