HOSTEL 2
Those of you who saw the first film, you know the drill.
American backpackers, tricked into staying at a Slavic hostel that
doubles as a front for purchase and torture of said backpackers.
Director Eli Roth manages to supply us with as much ( if not more ) gore
as the first. Some really good wincing moments AND a few surprises here
and there. Though I still did prefer the first, it's mostly because
sequels naturally lack the punch of an original idea and I still did
prefer the final "vengeance payoff" of the first. That being said, it
DOES live up to the first and makes a fine sequel!
1408
I have to say as much of a fan I am of Stephen King's written
work, I often find that his movies are very Hit and Miss. I think it's
difficult to translate a lot of his ideas visually and despite that,
they keep trying an books and short stories are wildly popular among
horror film makers.
1408 is NOT one of the "miss" movies! John Cusack is perfectly
cast as a paranormal investigator/writer who has lost all faith in
actual hauntings and criss-crosses the world, staying in supposedly
haunted hotels with a perfectly cynical view of them knowing they will
turn out to be complete hoaxes. Until he receives a mysterious postcard
from a New York hotel stating to stay away from room 1408. The film
actually manages to pass off the haunted room idea without being hokey
or cheesy and gives a good creep-out feel without relying on the gore
that many modern horror films feel the need to do.
-Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
