WHAT I CARE TO SEE
By Stephane Morrell

THE MIST

As an avid fan of Stephen King's novels ( and novellas ), I often find myself disappointed with the films based on his works. The fact that he gets into heavy descriptions of his characters and what their thoughts and memories are doesn't often translate to film. There are a few exceptions, of course . . . Carrie and The Shining to name a couple.

I am happy to say that The Mist can be added to that list. The moment I heard Frank Darabont was undertaking this one, I had high hopes. The story takes place in a small town grocery store that is suddenly wrapped in a thick mist. But this isn't just crazy weather as there are creatures in the mist. Weird, creepy and hungry creatures. What makes this interesting is that a good chunk of the movie is really about how the characters react to all of this and how people start acting when panicked and desperate.

Creature effects wise, it couldn't have been better. All in all, I have to say that except for the twist ending (which was not in the book at all ) it truly lived up to exactly what I pictured.
