WHAT I CARE TO SEE
By Stephane Morrell

CLOVERFIELD

When the first previews for this came out, I knew this was going to be one to watch. By all accounts, it was Godzilla meets The Blair Witch project. How is that? Well the movie tells the tale of a group of friends having a send off party for a friend who is leaving to work in Japan. When all of a sudden, explosions rock the city, people are scouring frantically everywhere as our heroes ( one of which who happened to be taping at the party, and left the camera rolling ) descend to street level to get out of the building arrive just in time to see the head of the Statue of Liberty land in front of them and hear very angry ominous roars in the distance.

That set the stage for what was to be a suspenseful re-invention of the "giant monster attacking the city" movie. It's told from the point of view of the people on the street cowering in fear. With just enough glimpses of the monster to scare but leave a little mystery. True to J.J. Abrahms' style, the film leaves many questions open to interpretation, which is another of its charms. The only warning I would have is if you are prone to motion sickness, sit way back in the theatre as it is filmed "camcorder" style.

Go in expecting to see Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter singing, and you'll come out happy.

-Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
