Salem Queen of Thorns #0

Salem Queen of Thorns was managed to stir up
controversy before the book was even released. Based
on the name alone, the book was accused of being
bigoted and anti-pagan. Having read the book, I can
say nothing it further from the truth. It would make
more sense for the Catholics to be offended by this
book, as it appears that the church is the villain,
rather than the witches. The witches are regarded by all of the characters that you're supposed to empathize with as innocent victims of sick, violent men. In fact, very little of the descriptive blurb for the book is actually explored at all in book 0. Book zero mostly works to assert the main characters and their world. And unfortunately the controversy over the book and the book's blurb itself are both a tad more interesting than the book itself. The hero and main villain feel like modern movie characters dropped into a far too old past for them. And the books itself seems to suffer from trying to cram too much action into too small a page count, leaving the reader feeling dizzy and like they've gleaned very little from what's going on it the overall plot. The art is beautifully done and highly consistent which is always the case with books put out by Boom Studios. But if you're going to pick this book up, it would probably be best to wait an issue or two more when more of the story becomes more self-evident.
