I read the synopsis for this comic very skeptically.
It mentioned it had the action of 24 with the tone of
X-files. I never much liked X-files and I'm possibly
one of the minority of people who's never seen an
episode of 24. The premise of The Foundation is that
Nostradamus using the profits from his very famous
prophesies to build a Foundation whose job it was to make
sure that none of his prophesies of doom and gloom
ever came true. Now, again the mention of Nostradamus
and his prophesies was enough to make me think "Yeah,
right." But I was quite delightfully wrong. The comic is fast paced and exciting. The use of Nostradamus' prophesies only really tangential. The story centers around a Foundation employee named James Valentine. James is having a crisis of faith, if you will. Is all of our world predestined or do we make our own future? After years of working for The Foundation, James has had enough. He's sick of playing God and deciding who he's supposed to save according to the prophesies and who are acceptable losses. James has been roped into one last mission with The Foundation and part of his job in this last mission is to train a new recruit from the ATF. The book goes at a nice exciting clip. It grabs you and doesn't let you go, even when the book ends. James Valentine is a very real look at a man put in the situation of having to make decisions about who lives and who dies for the greater good. He has doubts. He's believable and he feels real. His time with The Foundation has given him years of experience and training to talk about. The world is very fully realized and the characters react to it very appropriately. The art makes it sometimes hard to distinguish one white guy from another but overall isn't bad or unpleasant to look at. I'd definitely recommend looking into picking up this 5 part mini-series from Boom Studios.
