Panic at the Disco

Pretty. Odd.

Music Review by Sidra Roman

Two years ago Panic at the Disco put out a CD called A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. It was danceable and catchy. After several listens, it went into heavy rotation on my Ipod. It wasn't the best music I'd ever heard, but they had talent and I was deeply interested in seeing what they did as a follow up to it.

I ended up having to wait two years to find out, but it was well worth the wait. Their new album Pretty. Odd. shows beautiful growth in artistry and talent. A lot of people are very disappointed that this album sounds nothing like their first album. Personally, I think I would have been disappointed if this album had sounded exactly like the first one. Repetition of the exact same thing over and over again is stagnant and boring.

The additional criticism of this album is that it sounds like The Beatles. I'm still failing to see how this is supposed to be considered a bad thing. There are far worse things in the world to sound like than The Beatles. Allow me to point you at such horrible travesties of popular music such as ABBA, The BeeGees, Britney Spears, and The Backstreet Boys.

I have to admit that Pretty. Odd. does remind me heavily of The Beatles. It's not a direct copy, but the sound of it is similar. Lyrically, it's different from The Beatles. I'm very happy with my purchase. I'm very picky about what major label albums I'll buy. I don't like a lot of the RIAA's practices, so when I decide to give them money, I have to be sure it's something I'll really like. But my dislike for the RIAA, is a whole 'nother article in the making, and I won't bore you with it now.

I think this album is excellent and worth giving attention to. I've barely stopped listening to it since I bought it off of ITunes. And I can already tell you that I'm looking forward to whatever album they put out next, even if I have to wait another two years for it.

Do yourself a favor and check it out at your nearest music store or book store. You can find their very trippy Beatles inspired video for their first single "Nine in the Afternoon" on YouTube. I definitely recommend going out and seeing it, especially if you like The Beatles and The Killers.
