The last time we had a Serenity comic was before the movie. It was meant to bridge the gap between the movie and the series and to be honest, it rather sucked. The story was okay, but the art was so mediocre it was hard to tell non-main characters apart. In fact, sometimes it was hard to tell main characters apart.

With the success of his eighth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in comic form, Joss Whedon has returned to the comic medium with Serenity. Serenity: Better Days appears to take place sometime after the season but before the movie or its aforementioned comic series. The art this time around while not perfect, is decent and all the characters are recognizable in a panel or two.

Where this book succeeds is the writing. The dialogue is in fine Joss Whedon top form. There are numerous cute references to the series itself "The hero of Canton . . . is real." So far the crew has made a couple of big heists, and for once, only a moderate amount of things have gone wrong.

So far the comic doesn't appear to be settling on one character or another. River has a minimal role in it, but that might be because Serenity the movie and several bits of the series were so focused on her.

Overall, I think that if you liked the series and the movie you should like the book. All of the characters that bought the farm in the movie are back in the comic book, which is a good thing in my opinion because I liked both. However, I wouldn't expect character interactions that didn't happen in the movie to miraculously happen in the comic book, but who knows, I could be wrong there. Either way, if you're a fan, I think it'd be worth it to you to spend the time and money to go pick this book up. It's shiny.
