WHAT I CARE TO SEE
By Stephane Morrell

THE HAPPENING

One of the things that M. Knight has been faced with is the curse of having to create his movies as horror films with a twist because of expectations. As a result, many of his more recent films has been critically panned as "predictable" or "not scary" ( among other negative comments ). Having really enjoyed Signs and The Village, and having at least liked Lady in the Water should set the tone for this review of The Happening.

The movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel as a couple having some relationship tension, when people start to kill themselves with no explanation al over North America. It's unexplained and some believe it to be a biological terrorist threat. The idea created there is a spooky one and the tense effect IS there. The film also delivers some strange disturbing moments. However, as a whole, the acting performances were sort of wooden and the whole thing felt like it was lacking something ( passion maybe? ). I still wouldn't call this a *bad* film by any stretch. But it certainly places in my lukewarm list.
