Another year, another journey down to Atlanta, GA over Labor Day weekend for my third Dragon*Con.
If a person has read my previous two con reports for DC, then they've pretty much got the gist of what went on. I've learned over these multiple conventions that Dragon*Con is less about news, and more about hanging out with cool people, meeting new people, and seeing famous people. The occasional bit of news does dribble out at the various panels, usually when an actor misspeaks and lets too much information slip out. There are no major news items planned for this event, no big press releases coming from comic companies, or production studios. This is a very different convention from places like San Diego Comic Con, and the Wizard World conventions. This is more about the guests, and costuming, than hard, solid news.
So, I have nothing to really report. The few panels I did attend had nothing to do with news; one was about the Dawn look alike contest which I went to so I could hang out with some friends, and get some information on the photography side of things. The other panel was a recording of the What The Cast podcast, hosted by a number of people who work on the tech side of things for the con, and review pretty much any movie or TV show that falls into the geek genre side of things. They're a silly, lively bunch on the recordings, and not any less so when doing their thing live.
Aside from those, I only attended the Dawn look alike contest, a live performance by the Atlanta Radio Theater Company, and a comics writing dos and don'ts panel with Peter David, and Mike Baron, as well as others.
Much of my time was spent hanging out with friends, and hunting down people in all sorts of creative costumes of the usual sorts; comics, horror movies, armour, fantasy creatures, and more things besides. It's always a treat to see all different kinds of things in one place. The sight of seeing Pikachu walk past a creature from the Alien movies is an amazing sight to behold.
I did a pretty thorough job of documenting my weekend in pictures, and they can be found at my Flickr collection
here from my arrival and getting my badge, through to the parade on Saturday where I snapped over 300 photos of people marching, to the Dawn contest, into Marvel characters squaring off against their DC counterparts, and more besides, I got it all.
While Dragon*Con is rarely about big news and announcements, it is still a fun time, and one of my favourite conventions to attend, just for the sheer chaos and friendliness of it all.
