WHAT I CARE TO SEE
By Stephane Morrell

CORALINE

Actually delving quite close to the comic world but not quite, this film is based on the novel of the same name from Neil Gaiman. Having read and enjoyed the book, I was quite wary ( after all, the book is always better right? ). My fears were lessened when I heard Henry Selick was taking care of the project ( Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach ). But then he used the dreaded words "We're going to put our own spin on things"... uh oh...

Coraline is the story of a little girl who is unhappy with her parents, they never have time for her and she feels everything around is horrible. Until she discovers a secret door to a parallel world where her parents are everything she's ever dreamed of and give her everything she wants... but at what cost? The film is stop-motion animated, in true Henry Selick style.

In the end, the look of the movie is simply magical and completely carries over the feel of the book. What changes were made were clearly for pacing and development on-screen and really worked without triggering my nitpick alarm. Perhaps not for the very young children, but any kids ( old and young ;) ) who like a little bit of morbid with their animation will revel in this one.

-Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
