WHAT I CARE TO SEE
By Stephane Morrell

DISTRICT 9

20 Years ago, aliens appeared over Johannesburg South Africa, after a period of no activity, humanity decided to cut into the ship only to discover millions of starving aliens, which they brought down to Earth and restricted them to a designated area which quickly becomes a slum. Featured at San Diego Con, bringing the movie to a loud buzz and produced by Peter Jackson, District 9 was directed by Neill Blomkampt and was an extended version of a short film the director had already made and had always wanted to turn into a full length feature. Once the HALO film fell through ( which he was attached to ), this became his next project.

Ironically, this movie was not quite what I expected. While many DID think it would be an action-oriented alien movie. I was expecting MORE of an allegory of Apartheid in South Africa. Which it DID start off with. But after about 20 minutes, quickly switched to a more action oriented movie. That being said, it was still imaginative and gritty. Some have said that the use of shaky cameras was overdone, but in this film, it's a mix of documentary-style interviews and fake news reels, combined with handheld camera footage and plain old Hollywood-camera footage. The film concentrates on a government worker charged with evicting the aliens to move them into a different district, further away from the humans so as not to disturb them. Something happens to him however that changes his view on everything.
