The following excerpt appeared on 'Keep Quiet in the Library' - A Polarized Ions fansite which takes its name from an infamous song by Lucas Curry. Here they talk about music, spandex, heroism, great power and responsibility plus Hostess snacks.
Quiet:
Who are your favorite musical artists?
Curry:
The Beatles, Pre-Jesus Freak Bob Dylan, They Might Be Giants- some of Tom Waits. Given my own hearing impairment though- I feel a certain kinship to Ludwig Von Beethoven.
Quiet:
Curry:
Oh yeah. People say that Ode to Joy is one of the most optimistic pieces of music ever written. They're wrong. I'm not sure if you can understand this but can you imagine- even for a moment-- being able to write something like that- something truly beautiful and then not even be able to hear the results. That's not joyous. That's tragic.
Quiet:
<Awkward silence> So, what was it like being a rock star and a super hero?
Curry:
I have no idea. I'm totally not the guy to answer that question. Try asking Bono.
Quiet:
But weren't you Harmonics from The League of Explorers?
Curry:
Yes, I was. Looking back I'm not really sure we were all that heroic. We went around in strange costumes, stopped bank robberies and hi tech thieves. We fought a talking gorilla named Alvin Silverback a couple of times. In other words ,we treated symptoms of social problems and not the cause. That's why it's a never ending battle.
Quiet:
Why'd you start up the costume hero gig anyway?
Curry:
Early on in my career I was at this three night music festival. This hip hop artist- who I knew as Jayson Haines- was killed. I was in a place where I could have used my powers to throw off the guy's balance- but I didn't. I was naively trying to make up for that.
Quiet:
Curry:
Certain parties inside and outside our government politicized the whole thing. In the months following 9/11, we went from being super powered cops to being super powered soldiers. We were at war with Eurasia and it seemed like we always would be. I couldn't be a part of that anymore. I knew that with great power came a responsibility to make the world better. I began to think I should start using my powers for something other than violence.
Quiet:
Surely, being a super hero had its fun moments?
Curry:
Yeah - it did. One time Alvin Silverback held up the World Bank and demanded all their money or he'd start killing hostages.
Quiet:
Curry:
Yeah - Duplicator offered him as many Hostess Apple Pies as he could eat. For some reason he surrendered right away. He went straight after that. The courts bought his appeal. He argued that being the world's only sentient Gorilla he couldn't receive a trial by a jury of his peers. The papers had a field day: 'Gorilla Escapes Monkey Trial'. After that, he moved to England, started a charitable foundation for preserving gorilla and orangutans in the wild. I'm scheduled to go to a ceremony at Buckingham Palace at Christmas to see him get knighted. Crazy world how the world works, isn't it?
