GI Joe movie was not previewed

When the GI Joe movie was released back in August, Paramount had the half-crazy half-genius idea of not previewing the movie to a large number of critics throughout the United States and instead did select screenings in the heartland of the US. As a result, the early reviews from those places were pretty much positive scoring an 80% on RottenTomatoes.com. Unfortunately things fell apart when the movie was released and critics went to see it for themselves. A good majority of them disliked the movie and dropped the percentage on Rotten Tomatoes to 39%.

I personally have not seen the movie and I really don't want to, either. When I heard that the movie was being made I told myself that I would not see it because they were casting the roles all wrong and it would not be the GI Joe that I knew and loved in the 1980's and 90's. I'm one of the biggest fans of GI Joe there can be, but it does not seem right that the movie was made live-action and that the force was multi-national. To me GI Joe was always an American thing and that is the way it was. Granted by the end of the toy line they had figures from England and Russia in the line, but that was the end of the line and they had basically run out of steam to make the action figures. It's been said that the reason the team was made multi-national was not to alienate foreign audiences.

Then there is the whole thing about changing Cobra Commander's backstory from one where he was a used car salesman trying to take over the world with funding from a multi-level-marketing scheme to one that he was an evil scientist who was trying to take over the world with nanobots. So far the only bright spot in the entire movie was, from what I hear, Christopher Eccleston's performance as the weapon's dealer Destro. I liked him way back when he was The Doctor of Doctor Who fame, and it's good to see that he can still put on a good role even when the script is not the best in the world.

Here is a link to a review of the movie from the Yo Joe! Web site: http://www.yojoe.com/reviews/movies/rocreview.shtml

The reviewer brings up some good points about how the movie was meant for a Third Generation of GI Joe fans rather than for fans like me that are used to the lovingly nurtured back story of the characters from the comic books of the 1980s and 1990's. I'm sorry, I guess I'm just not that open-minded to throw out 20+ years of backstory just to see one summer "blockbuster."

Rumor: Star Wars figures going back to old style cards in 2010

According to a poster on the Rebelscum.com messageboard, it looks like that Hasbro is going to go back to the vintage style cardbacks for their action figures starting with the spring line of 2010. I really want to believe this is true because that was one of the best parts of the vintage action figures. I had always wanted to go back and make old school cards for the figures that they release now just so that I could have that little bit of nostalgia. I don't know if they are going to put them on cards that are the same size as the old ones, but here's hoping.

Random Bits

The fallout from the San Diego Comic-Con has already come to pass with the 0 issue of The Incredibles ongoing series coming out last month and frankly, I'm excited. If Mark Waid can keep up the kind of storytelling he was doing with the first limited series and make it half as engaging, then it'll be a hit.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

I'm sorry, but when you take a work of literature like Pride and Prejudice and decide to add zombies to the mix, you have taken the love of zombies too far. I'm sick of crap like Pirates, Ninjas, Monkeys, Zombies and whatever else getting the spotlight of everything on the internet. It's getting to be that you cannot hold a conversation with anyone between the age of 18 and 40 without one of those being mentioned.

Archie + Veronica = Love?

Issue number 600 of Archie comics came out last month and it had Archie proposing marriage to Veronica as the beginning of a six issue arc in the book. This would have been a much bigger surprise had it not been announced two months ago. As for Archie's choice between the two, Betty and Veronica, I think he made the right call. He won't have to work half as much as he would if he was having to support Betty because Veronica's daddy is rich and can pay for the things she might need so he can have more money to himself to pay off Veronica's ring.
