I was sitting around at work the other night, flipping through some old Marvel Universe books and trying to come up with a victim.... of course, I mean 'subject', for my column this month. I've kinda hit a dry spell, lately, and I thought I'd look for characters that I've rarely, or in some cases, never, drawn before. I decided on two characters, one of which I did in a commission a few years back, and another which I've never bothered with, because she just never caught my attention much. The first character is the Black Cat. I always liked her in her Spider-Man appearances, and there's nothing wrong with her costume, per se, it'd just that I thought I could streamling it a bit. For the record, I think the only reason she's got white hair is because Catwoman has black hair. But, hey, I like white-haired ladies, so I won't mess with that, it's just a point that bugs me in a color-themed character.

In redesigning Black Cat, I thought to make the body suit a little sexier, by dropping the V neckline to a much more distracting depth. I tossed out the fur-topped boots and added some fur to the gloves, possibly to conceal hidden climbing gear or burglar tools. I like her as a thief with a heart of gold, and any heroic things she does are done to sting some bad guy.

For this next character, I realized that I'd never drawn her before, even though she interested me as a character. I looked at some recent versions, and she seems to have lost her wings, but I think she needs the wings to be calling herself Deathbird. As a villain in Ms. Marvel, she was pretty effective, and then we learned that she's the sister of the Shi'Ar Majestrix, Lilandra, who became such an integral part of the X-Men mythos, over time. Supposedly, she's an atavism, a throwback to an earlier stage of Shi'Ar evolution. As such, she was passed over for the succession and her brother, D'Ken became emperor. This didn't go down well, and she was later exiled for crimes against the state. (I find I'm liking her more than I thought) She eventually fond herself washed up on our shores, and fought with Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye while she worked to repair her starship.

While I love the work of Dave Cockrum, I have to say I never liked this costume at all. I just never liked the feathered shoulders and boots. For my design, I borrowed some of the lines of the original costume and converted them to more cloth-like look. The idea for the shoulder piece is that it attaches to a strap or narrow section of cloth at her back, leaving her wings free. The boots and bracers follow a common Cockrum styling and I gave her a very "fantasy-pirate" sash.

That's about it, for this month. Had a bit of an upheavel, the last few weeks and it threw off my chi. It's getting harder to pick my victims, with all the revamps and revivals going on in the comics world, these days.
