NEXT PHASE

I got into the Authority relatively late in the game. A friend of mine loaned me the original issues and I thought it was great. The only thing I ever had a problem with from the original stories was Frank Quitely's art. I'm sorry, but I've never liked it and I never will. When he draws characters they always look like they've got cellulite bumps somewhere on them . . . or everywhere on them. So, other than that issue, I thought the original run of The Authority was great. I've been reading all of the relaunches since that point and have purchased the trades of the original issues.

While the recent Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning issues have been a bit confusing, as I really don't understand what happened to the Wildstorm Universe, I have still enjoyed the issues they wrote. I thought their run on Resurrection Man was great and since then I've done my best to check out any titles they're attached to, given the finances to do so. Still, the time has come for things to change yet again.

The Authority will now be written by Adam Freeman and Marc Bernardin. If I've read anything by them I don't know it. Luckily that means I'm fairly open to whatever may come. Initially I was hesitant to continue reading the title after Abnett and Lanning left because I was afraid that without their touch I just wouldn't care about the Authority in Wildstorm's new "apocalyptic" era. I was pleasantly surprised though when I saw that Freeman and Bernardin appear to be taking the Authority away from the current problems of Wildstorm's Earth, and I'm just fine with that.

Now please keep in mind that unlike many of my friends that read comics (and who write articles here) I don't like spoilers. I don't want to know the details of what is coming down the line for a title. I don't mind having an idea of what is coming (a war, team "shakeup", etc.), but I don't want the details. The reason I don't want details is so that I am surprised by things such as finding out that the Authority is leaving Earth and that their new adventure looks to be focusing on something that has been a major part of their adventures since the start, the Carrier.

Right now it appears that The Authority: The Lost Year may also be working on a few small items that could play into what is happening in the regular title. There is no guarantee, but if that is the case it could make things much richer as the new main title story unfolds. Frankly, I'm just glad the Lost Year is finally being finished, but that's another rant for another day.

As a nice little addition to the change of writers and story taking place in The Authority, it appears as though the Carrier itself is also moving into its next phase. While the members of the Authority have changed to some degree recently (at least psychologically) it appears that the Carrier itself is the part of the team that has changed the most. The question now is will that change prove to be for the better of the Authority the team and The Authority the title. Time will tell.
