Random Crap

It looks like the big news to come out of January besides the launch of The Siege by Marvel Comics and the continuing saga that is Blackest Night for DC, was the news that Wizards of the Coast is not going to keep the Star Wars License for their games. According to this link at rebelscum.com: ( http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Wizards_Of_The_Coast_Dropping_Star_Wars_129070.asp) I can see why they are not going to keep the Collectable Miniatures Game around; you can only make so many versions of the characters from the movie as well as the expanded universe, but not keeping the RPG does not make sense.

With an RPG you can expand the possibilities of the universe, like West End Games did throughout the 1980's and 1990's with books like Platt's Spaceport Guide and Cracken's Field Guide. Yes, I do have a slight man crush on all the writers of the West End Games books and would like to get my hands on as many of them as I can because they added a rich layer of mythos to the Star Wars galaxy and gave players all new playgrounds to play on. Which company would I like to see get the Star Wars Role Playing Game rights? I would like to see it go to an already established company like Mongoose Games or Cubicle 7 Games. Mongoose Games writes some pretty fluffy and crunchy games. (In other words they are great with rules and story stuff for your games) and already have a good track record with gamers for games based on a license, like the Conan RPG. Cubicle 7 games have also put out the brand spanking new Dr. Who RPG that has been well received by gamers and fans of the series alike. Yes, both companies have trouble with some of their example characters, but nothing as egregious as Wizards of the Coast's not following their own character creation rules when designing non-player characters. Those two companies I think would do the Star Wars license justice.

Personally I would like to see the miniatures license for the Star Wars Universe go to a company like Games Workshop. They can use their already existing engine for miniatures game and make it like the Lord of the Rings game for Star Wars. I would be more than willing to plunk down $15 for a metal miniature of a Jedi Luke Skywalker and be done with it rather than having to go through blind boxed packages to get a Luke Skywalker I really want. The options are endless on miniatures you can make. You could have something like they have in the Warhammer 40K line, where you could buy for $22-$32 a box of plastic miniatures (10-12 total) that you could assemble yourself and it could be Stormtroopers, Rebel Soldiers, Clone Troopers or any specialized sub group of them (Clone Marines, Scout or Snow Troopers, Hoth Rebel Troopers) along with a sergeant to lead them. You would also get to paint them however you wanted. I'm not sure what other companies are out there that do not produce blind boxed games.
