Emerald City Comicon, |
I know most everyone is now focused on the few bits out from WonderCon, or the excitement from Chicago and the first CE2E and to be honest the announcements at Emerald City were slim, with most of the focus on questions and signings. It was a great con to be sure but there was a lot of info to be had, rumors to enjoy, and creators were saying a lot . . . on the dealer room floor, if not at the panels. Tim Sale continues to say Captain America White is coming, but when is still anyone's guess. Clayton Crain met with Joe Quesada on the 13th of March at the con to discuss his next project of which he was given several choices. He did hint that it would be "big" character and that he was hopeful to get six weeks to work on the issues instead of just a month so that the artwork would look better. He said "while X-Force has taught me how to do a book in a month, I'm cutting too many corners and my work is not as good, but with six weeks time that lets me go back and tweak things." Jason Pearson loves doing Deadpool covers and plans to continue doing them as long as he can. His convention art book was a preview of his upcoming interior and cover gig doing Deadpool Wade Wilson's War. Looks great. James Robinson was very excited and teaser happy with news about the upcoming Shade series (though mini or permanent he was unsure at the time) and the chance to revisit Opal City. He also had a lot to say about Justice League of America and his chance to finally solidify the team in the next few months. He teased heavily about an unknown member (now confirmed to be Jade) and her interaction with the team, and Starfire's departure. ("I had to let Starfire go in order to help the sales on another book", confirmed to be R.E.B.E.L.S.) He was excited though about utilizing Cyborg better and using his ties to S.T.A.R. Labs to put him as head of their robotics division in Chicago, with a loose lead in to the upcoming Robot Wars arc he has planned after the JSA/JLA crossover. Kurt Busiek was excited and talkative about his upcoming Marvel work and a sequel to Superman Secret Identity called Batman Secret Identity, which was the only DC work he had to talk about. Darick Robertson spoke at length about his love of Spider-Man, the Boys, and Conan. While signing and looking at a copy of Spider-Man Team Up #5 (a Ben Reilly Spider-Man/Gambit team up, along with Howard the Duck, written and drawn by him) he lamented the fact that most often with icons like Spider-Man or Superman he is stuck drawing the non-iconic versions: the long haired Superman, the Ben Reilly Spider-Man. When it comes to the Boys though he is excited and looking forward to drawing the upcoming Butcher mini-series planned for later 2010, featuring Butcher's origin. He will draw it hopefully while still doing the Boys monthly, though if needed he will let someone else take the Boys monthly in order to focus on the mini. Also Dark Horse wants more Conan, which Robertson is eager to do though finding the time for it is difficult. Best Robertson quote, "Yeah you can tell that's Garth Ennis's signature . . . there are no discernable letters in there whatsoever . . . " (said after being handed a copy of the virgin Boys Herogasm #1 to sign which had Ennis's "signature" on it). Brian Michael Bendis had one of the longest lines at the convention, only matched by Ed Brubaker's line or Geoff Jones' line (when he was actually signing) which were the longest at Emerald City. Bendis was having an official meeting with execs concerning the Powers TV show the week of March 12 through 16th. He was very excited and said that the buzz on what was coming so far on the show was great. Also he told fans at the con that his creator owned project with Alex Maleev was one of the main reasons Spider-Woman was going on hiatus, though as he wrote in Spider-Woman #7 itself a large part of it was Maleev's fatigue at drawing the character. (Of great interest to me at the con was the chance to tell Bendis about one of my best friends who loves Spider-Woman more then any person should, who while over the top happy about her return in New Avengers years ago, fell a year behind reading the title and was unaware she was a Skrull. While buying his books for him I had to flip covers around to hide this news from him in order to not spoil it. He finally caught up around the time Secret Invasion #6 was released and was . . . well furious and impressed with Bendis' cover up and excited for the new Spider-Woman series. Bendis had only one response to my story: "Worst episode of Friends ever.") Mark Texeria loved talking about a short story he did for Penthouse Comix #28 and how he wishes he could get to draw more girls. While drawing Wolverine or Ghost Rider is fun, "sexy babes are where it is at!" Scott Allie confirmed more Solomon Kane for later this year and said the series is doing well. He loves writing it because "Solomon Kane does things no other "sane" hero would do." Kevin Maguire spoke at length of his love of doing the upcoming Booster Gold covers and the Justice League Generation Lost covers. However, he did not know that his covers will be 1-50 and 1-25 exclusive covers, and therefore not seen by many fans. This news lead to a discussion of just what this meant, with several other creators commenting that they wish the covers could be seen by more fans and not be exclusive variants. And nicest creator there was a toss up between Michael Avon Oeming and Tim Bradstreet. Both great creators and friendly guys. Finally, several creators were discussing DC and their move to get more exclusive creators. However, one creator coming off his exclusive found that though DC told him there would be no incentive to continue his exclusive other then getting health care was surprised to learn that his page rate was dropped by $50 a page after going non-exclusive.
